The Govt Relations Office of John Giannetti

A Measure of the Man; Our President, Our Washington

A speech by Senator John Giannetti commemorating General George Washington's 1783 Resignation of his Military Commission before the United States in Congress Assembled.

The capital of the United States at the time of the event was Annapolis, Maryland.

Senator John Giannetti (D-21, Anne Arundel and Prince George's Counties) presented a speech entitled "A Measure of the Man, Our President, Our Washington" on February 16, 2004 to a room filled with distinguished guests and elected officials. The annual speech, given by a selected Maryland Senator, takes place in the Old Senate Chamber of the Maryland Statehouse in Annapolis, Maryland.

In December, 1783, George Washington resigned his commission as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army. The well-received speech, reproduced in full below, provides a fine narration of the events surrounding the historic event. The full text of the speech is preserved in the Official Proceedings of the Maryland Senate.
